EL-O-MATIC Spring Return or Double Acting Rotary Valve Actuators are compact, simply designed control devices quality engineered to provide high torque outputs (to 40,000 in. lb..) and a high cycle, trouble-free life. A compact, dual opposed rack and pinion design and guide band suspension system combine to produce a symmetrically balanced, center mount actuator with a short powerful stroke, rapid response, and fully concentric operating load capability for optimum performance.

Available manual override, the fully integrated PosiFlex™ valve positioning system, limit switches, and solenoid valves provide complete control and monitoring capability.

Rotation
Counterclockwise with Port "A" pressurized. Spring return actuators fail clockwise. Rotation is field reversible.

Features

Three Point Suspension Systems
Three carbon filled Teflon© guide bands provide a low friction bearing surface for piston alignment and rack support.

Elimination of metal-to-metal contact between pistons and cylinder wall reduces friction for outstanding cycle life, smooth piston travel, and maximum power.


Patented Balanced Piston Design
As part of our exclusive suspension system, three equally spaced bearing surfaces are cast into each piston. Air pressure is applied to two piston areas simultaneously to deliver a "balanced force" across the diameter of a common pinion gear.

Transfer of maximum power occurs along the central guide band at the point of rack and pinion contact resulting in even distribution of bearing loads, optimum gear engagement, and elimination of piston tilting.


Dual Opposed Piston Design
Air pressure is applied to two piston areas simultaneously to deliver a "balanced force" across the diameter of a common pinion gear.

Dual opposed design results in a piston diameter 41% smaller than a single piston design. Symmetrically balanced center mount construction eliminates undue stress on valve stem, neck, and piping system.


Alloy 70-75 Drive Shaft
High performance aluminum alloy exclusive to EL-O-MATIC actuators ensures precision rack and pinion engagement.

Lightweight alloy shaft provides greater corrosion resistance.


Multiple Spring Concept
Off-the-shelf availability of multiple spring design means actuators are available for 40, 60, 80, or 100 psig supply air requirements.

Equal spring force application to each piston enhances actuator life while conversion from double acting to spring return is simple and safe.


Recessed Output Drive
All units feature a recessed square drive that is precision machined for accurate positioning and is designed to ISO 5211.

A universal adapter is available to provide "direct couple" to valve stem (E25 through E1600 only).


Operation

EL-O-MATIC rack and pinion actuators are manufactured with an integral air manifold and internal porting. The air manifold is designed to NAMUR standards for direct mounting of the EL-O-MATIC solenoid valve module. This eliminates the need for external tubing and simplifies installation. For applications not requiring a solenoid valve, the air manifold inlet ports are marked "A" and "B".

Air-To-Air (Double Acting)

Air To Port "A"
Pressure is applied to the central chamber driving the dual opposing pistons outward. Linear piston force is transferred via gear racks to the pinion gear to produce rotary (counterclockwise) motion.


Air To Port "B"
Pressure is applied to the outside chambers through the internal port driving the pistons inward to produce rotary (clockwise) motion.


Spring Return (Single Acting)

Air To Port "A"
Pressure is applied to the center chamber driving the pistons outward. This compresses the springs in the outside chambers and produces rotary (counterclockwise) motion.


Loss of Pressure
Upon loss of pressure the stored energy in the compressed springs drives the pistons inward producing rotary (clockwise) motion. This "fail safe" position is held until air pressure is reapplied to Port "A".

Options

Solenoid OptionSolenoid Valve
Mounts directly to actuator air inlet manifold. Available in NEMA 4 or 7 and with any AC or DC voltage. Manual override is standard. Modular Options: Speed controls, dual coil, intrinsically safe.


Override OptionManual Override Unit
Declutchable gear design fits between valve and actuator. Five model sizes are MO10, 50, 160, 520, and 600. Compact, modular, and fully enclosed. Modular Options: Vent valve package, padlockable declutch.


180 Actuation Option180° Actuation
Extended rotation for multi-ported valves. Modification from standard 90° version requires a simple gearing change. Available in both 2 position, 3 position, double acting, and spring return versions (E12 and "P" Series only).


Dribble Control OptionDC-1 Dribble Control System
Effectively converts any quarter turn valve into a two-stage shutoff valve for accurate batch process control. A fully adjustable first stage frow rate feature allows adjustment of flow volume to acommodate various fluid and process system changes. Modular Options: Switch indicator, various NEMA ratings.


Omni Switch Option"OMNI SWITCH" HDN Indicating Module
Accurate and reliable rotary limit switch package with visual positin indicator for use with all EL-O-MATIC rack and pinion actuators and other rotary devices. Standard unit contains two SPDT snap-acting switches that are independently adjustable. Rugged housing is CSA listed for locations requiring NEMA 4, 7and/or 9 enclosures. Modular Options: 4 or 6 switches, hermetically sealed switches, inductive sensors, potentiomenter.
